TEST PROTOCOL FOR APPLICATION OF SURTREAT EPOXY PRIMER PLUS VCI
SHIP YARD
SELECTION OF TEST SURFACES AND PREPARATION
Rusted steel surface exposed to salt corrosive environment with recessed areas such as plate overlaps, rivet and nut and bolt fixtures.
Corroded steel surface prepared to white steel with abraded surface.
Rinse corroded surface to remove salt and wire brush to remove lose rust.
Leave rusted surface as found for application of primer
APPLICATION OF EPOXY PRIMERS
Apply 2 part polyamide epoxy primer conforming to MIL-DTL-24441 Formula 150 TYPE III in one coat at 3ml dry film to each test surface as selected.
Apply 2 part Surtreat Epoxy Primer Plus VCI to each surface in one coat at 3 mil dry film.
May apply one coat of finish top coat if desired on part of the primer coated surfaces. Leave part of surfaces with primer only for performance observation.
SUPPLY OF SURTREAT EPOXY PRIMER PLUS VCI
Supplied as 2 part kits in 2 gallon or less sizes. Meets all technical specifications of MIL-DTL-24441 Formula 150 Type III except that Surtreat vapor phase corrosion inhibitor (VCI) added to Part A in amount that the final dry film contain 2.5Wt.% of VCI agent.
PERFORMANCE OBSERVATION
Identify surface application areas for future examination. Laboratory test using salt fog chamber exposure for 500 hours gave significant corrosion on rusted and white metal surface with epoxy primer and limited to no corrosion with Surtreat Epoxy Primer Plus VCI.
